Do I need to pay an agent fee if I rent an apartment in Malaysia?
And whats the basic criteria theyre looking from a potential tenant?
Do i have to show my payslip? Im a freelancer-self employed and I dont have a payslip. How do I go bout that?
I am a first timer and clueless.

    I don’t believe so.

It depends whether you are using a real estate agent to rent your apartment. But in most cases, no.
There isn’t usually a basic requirement that they look for. Just as long as you can pay the rent :)

Some are paid by the homeowner. You do have to show that you have a job , good credit, and have some savings. You show what you paid in taxes last year if you dont have a paystub. This is easy. They need good tenants.

The owner absorbs the agent fee which is usually about 1months rent. The agent does all the paper work for the owner and tenant.
